The Stirring Exploits of West Country Mariners who discovered the New World .
The events that lead  to the founding of the Popham Colony in 1607
During Queen Elizabeth I’s reign, men were men and English galleons ruled the waves.  The Queen’s Court sizzled with the glitterati of finely honed, educated and often ruthless subjects.  A select few were sent out into the world to fill England’s coffers and claim far-off lands.  The Queen rewarded them with honours, land and property.  Many of her master mariners came from England’s ‘West Country’.  Their great houses dotted the landscape and added lustre to that glorious age.  With their navigational expertise and seamanship they sailed westward, initially to find Cathay, the Land of Spice in the Far East. Instead they discovered a land that was to be America and where the name Norumbega had a certain allure.
